Prac 2: Diagnostic Tests

SNAP® Foal IgG

This test is an example of a common test technology called ELISA (enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay). The basis if this technology is to detect the presence of either an antigen or a specific antibody. In this case the antigen is the IgG antibody of the plasma.

ELISA test utilize monoclonal antibodies that specifically react to the antigen (equine IgG). Antibodies specific to the antigen are firmly fixed in a strip within the nitrocellulose base (situated in the windows). Free moving antibodies that specific to the antigen are initially found in the well receiving the test sample. The second group of antibodies contain an enzyme that will convert a colourless reagent into a dark colour.

The cost if a SNAP test is approximately $40.
