Prac 3: Virus Spread Simulation
Prac 3: Virus Spread Simulation
Methods (2)
The simulations will be guided by instructions at each step. These instructions are provided below for your reference. At most of the steps there will be one member of the group leaving to have a meeting each step. It is very important that if you have a meeting for your role you leave your Group IMMEDIATELY. No matter how important you might think what you were doing was you need to meet straight away.
These meetings will be time-limited (generally less than 2 minutes to emulate the lack of time available to control teams during genuine viral outbreaks). At each meeting there will need to be a number of contacts. If there is an odd number at the meeting one of the members will be excluded from the contacts. As well these meetings give you the opportunity to work things out with the others in your role in the other groups and share information. It is important to give information to the Controller. They will be at the meetings and will rely on you at the meetings to give them the information on what is happening.
While the meeting is occurring the remaining members of the group will need to make a contact. Since there are three group members one of them will be excluded from having a “contact”. After the meeting the member who was present has a short time to update the rest of the group on what occurred. Ensure you complete the details of your own contacts in your Personal Data file. Also this will be essential information for the MO when they’re meeting away from the group. give them the information on what is happening.
Simulation 1
Open up the two files required for this simulation: Personal Data file and the file for your role (SO,MO,TO or LO). Get ready for the next Step and be ready to immediately go to the Meeting Room if your role has the next meeting (SOs meet in Step 1).1) The SO for each group will meet with all the corresponding SOs from the other groups. They will elect a Surveillance Coordinator (SC). They will make ‘contact’ with one of the other SOs. MO will contact (1) the LO within the group. TO has no contact. MO will need to start recording the contacts on their ‘Simulation 1 Contacts’ file. The TOs and SOs can begin to put in details into their reports give them the information on what is happening.
2) The LOs will meet. They will elect a Laboratory Liaison Coordinator (LC). Each will make one contact. The TO will contact (2) the MO within the group. SO has no contact. MO will record the contacts on their ‘Simulation 1 Contacts’ file. give them the information on what is happening.
3) The MOs will meet. They will elect a Mapping Coordinator (MC). Each will make one contact. The TO will contact (3) the SO within the group. LO has no contact. MO will need to start recording the contacts on their ‘Simulation 1 Contacts’ file. give them the information on what is happening.
4) The TOs will meet. They will elect a Tracing Coordinator (TC). Each will make one contact. The SO will contact (4) the LO within the group. MO has no contact. MO will record the contacts on their ‘Simulation 1 Contacts’ file. give them the information on what is happening.
5) SO meet and make one (new) contact (5). MO will contact the LO within the group. TO has no contact. They will report to the CONTROLLER. give them the information on what is happening.
The SOs will now arrange for testing to occur. Each group will get one one Test Kit (KalavirusKontrol produced by FudGen Diagnostics AusTM). The LOs will record the results of tests for members of their group on their ‘Simulation 1 Test Results’ file. SOs will report that the testing was done. There is now important information that needs to get to the CONTROLLER: • Number confirmed as positive • Number confirmed as negative • Estimated number infected at present • Estimated number not infected at present • Predicted number to be infected • Predicted number to be not infected • What strategy have we had? give them the information on what is happening.
6) The LOs will meet and make one (new) contact (6). They will report to the CONTROLLER. The TO will contact the MO within the group. SO has no contact. MO will record the contacts on their ‘Contacts’ file. give them the information on what is happening.
7) The MOs will meet and make one (new) contact (7). They will report on the contacts to the CONTROLLER. The TO will contact the SO within the group. LO has no contact. MO will record the contacts on their ‘Simulation 1 Contacts’ file. give them the information on what is happening.
8) The TOs will meet and make one (new) contact (8). They will meet with the CONTROLLER and conclude what participants have been affected. The SO will contact the LO within the group. MO has no contact. MO will record the contacts on their ‘Simulation 1 Contacts’ sheet. give them the information on what is happening.
9) SO meet and make one (new) contact (9). MO will contact the LO within the group. TO has no contact. SO will report to the CONTROLLER. The CONTROLLER reports the outcome of the outbreak (Media Conference) based on the information that has been provided. They should indicate the approach(es) taken to reduce the spread of infection and try to predict those who are either infected or non-infected. give them the information on what is happening.
10) The LOs will meet and make one (new) contact (10). They will report to the CONTROLLER. The TO will contact the MO within the group. SO has no contact. MO will record the contacts on their Contacts file. . All samples are tested. give them the information on what is happening.
11) All samples are tested. The CONTROLLER reports the outcome of the outbreak (Media Conference) based on the information that has been provided. They should indicate the approach(es) taken to reduce the spread of infection and try to predict those who are either infected or non-infected. give them the information on what is happening. The LOs will record the results of all tests for members of their group on the central ‘Simulation Known Status’ Excel worksheet. The TOs and SOs complete their reports. give them the information on what is happening.
The CONTROLLER will report on the results of the testing and the results of the outbreak and its control. Specifically: • Number confirmed as positive • Number confirmed as negative • How effective were we? • Did we have a strategy that worked? • What worked? • What could we do to improve? • What didn't work? Note: everyone is responsible for the information presented at the Media Conference. If the information is not presented or is inaccurate, we have all let the Teams down.
Make sure your two files are completed and submitted.
Simulation 2
In this trial there will be a series of meetings but this time the testing will commence after Step 5 and only 5 tests will be released after each subsequent Step. The SOs meet after Steps 6 and 7 (without contacts) for a limited time to decide on who will be tested and take the tests back. The TOs will decide who does not make a contact in the remaining members of the group in each step however team members must make a different contact to that made in the previous step. TOs can also suggest who misses contacts in the meetings.Open up the two files required for this simulation.
1) SO will meet and make contact (1) with one of the other SOs. TOs decide which of the three remaining team members will not contact another team member. Team members that made contact during the previous step cannot make the same contact this step. Throughout the simulation the MO needs to be collecting and recording the contact data in the Simulation 2 Contacts file.
2) The LOs will meet and make one contact (2). TOs decide which of the three remaining team members will not contact another team member. Team members that made contact during the previous step cannot make the same contact this step.
3) The MOs will meet and make one contact (3). TOs decide which of the three remaining team members will not contact another team member. Team members that made contact during the previous step cannot make the same contact this step.
