Some of the alveolar macrophages contain phagocytosed erythrocytes or haemosiderin. These so-called “heart failure” cells accumulate in the lungs of animals with chronic left-sided congestive heart failure but may also be seen whenever there is chronic haemorrhage into the lungs.
