History:
An 18 month old Merino ewe was found dead approximately
7 hours after the last flock inspection. The carcase was bloated and malodourous.
There was locally severe serosanguineous oedema over the right proximal
thigh and adjacent flank, with crepitus of the underlying musculature.
Musculature of the proximal right thigh was dry and
dark red-black, with irregular separation of the muscle bundles by blood-stained
oedema fluid and gas.

In this low power view of skeletal muscle from the thigh,
note the blanched appearance of the muscle and the irregular separation
of the fascicles by oedema fluid and gas bubbles.
