Actinomycosis:
Actinomyces bovis is a commensal organisms within the oral cavity
and infection is usually secondary to minor abrasions in the gingiva.
Bacteria are resistant to phagocytosis and generally incite a chronic,
granulomatous inflammatory reaction, which is very difficult to treat
with antibiotics. Characteristic features of infection are the formation
by the bacteria of “club colonies” or sulphur granules.
