The neurons also appear more
angular and contracted than normal and the nuclei are shrunken and
staining more darkly than normal.
Neurons - red arrowheads,
gliosis - green arrowheads, reactive endothelium - blue arrowheads.
This is the most common morphological appearance of
necrotic neurons in the CNS. The dead neurons will persist for several
days before liquefying. Some neuronal debris may be phagocytosed by microglia
or other macrophages entering the damaged site from perivascular spaces
or meninges or derived from blood monocytes.
