Introduction

At higher magnification, randomly scattered hepatocytes appear enlarged with giant nuclei. Some of the nuclei appear pale and vesicular because of invagination of cytoplasm into the nucleus.

These giant hepatocytes are termed megalocytes. The process by which they undergo enlargement is termed megalocytosis.

The golden-brown intracytoplasmic pigment in some of the periportal (zone 1) hepatocytes is probably a combination of bile pigments (indicative of intrahepatic cholestasis) and ceroid-lipofuscin.

Is this an acute or chronic hepatopathy?

What do you think might be the cause of the liver lesions?

What is the significance of the megalocytosis?

What clinical signs might this sheep have displayed?
