Case 3:
History:
Three Border Leicester ewes being housed for future
experimental research purposes died suddenly over a space of four days.
An additional ewe in an adjacent shed was observed to be jaundiced and
to be passing dark red-brown urine. The latter sheep was euthanised and
it and one of the other ewes were necropsied.
Necropsy Findings:
The carcases of both ewes were jaundiced, especially
that of the euthanised sheep. The livers were swollen, discoloured orange
and soft. The gall bladders were distended by dark green-black bile. The
spleens were enlarged and congested. The kidneys were diffusely discoloured
a dark brown-black. In one sheep, the urine in the bladder was green.
In the other, the urine was dark red-brown.

A prominent histological feature of the livers of both
sheep was the presence of severe intrahepatic cholestasis, with prominent
bile plugs distending the canaliculi between hepatocytes. There was also
mild to moderate fatty degeneration of hepatocytes.
