Introduction:
The liver is the largest gland in the body.
The major functions of the liver can be summarised as follows:

detoxification of metabolic waste products

destruction of spent red blood cells and reclamation of their
constituents (in conjunction with the spleen)

synthesis and secretion of bile into the duodenum via the biliary
system
-
synthesis of plasma proteins including thc clotting factors but
excluding the immunoglobulins
-
synthesis of plasma lipoprotein
-
metabolic functions eg glycogen synthesis, gluconeogenesis
