Case 4:
History:
A 5 year old female spayed German shepherd had a one month
history of moderately severe non-regenerative anaemia, depression, lethargy
and inappetence. Bone marrow examination revealed erythroid hypoplasia.
A presumptive diagnosis of immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia with immune
attack on marrow erythrocyte precursors was made but the bitch failed
to respond to immunosuppressive therapy. Due to her deteriorating condition,
euthanasia was performed.
At necropsy, severe chronic mitral valvular endocarditis
was discovered. There were also numerous haemorrhagic foci scattered throughout
the lungs and kidneys. A heavy growth of Staphylococcus aureus was isolated
from the mitral valve vegetations and from a fresh specimen of kidney.
This is a low power view of the
outer renal cortex. Several foci of haemorrhage, necrosis and inflammation
are apparent in the outer cortical parenchyma.
