Introduction

Case 5:

History:

8 year old entire female beagle. Presented for progressive weight loss and lethargy over a 2 month period. Over the last week, she had developed ascites and dependent oedema of the ventral trunk and the distal limbs.

The serum albumin concentration was 14 g/L. Dipstick urinalysis revealed 4+ proteinuria. The latter was confirmed by determination of the urine protein:creatinine ratio which was very high at 8.0 (normal < 1.0).

A diagnosis of severe protein-losing nephropathy was made. Because of the poor prognosis, the owners requested euthanasia.

This is a low power view of the renal cortex. The arrows indicate glomeruli. The crowding of glomeruli together suggests that there has been considerable shrinkage of cortical tissue. The glomeruli are also too large and prominent at this magnification. Many of the cortical tubules are dilated with very thin lining epithelium.
