Introduction

Atrophy:

This is the decrease in size of a tissue (or organ) due to a decrease in the size and/or number of cells within the tissue. Acute skeletal muscle atrophy occurs because of a decrease in the size of individual muscle cells rather than a reduction in the number of muscle cells present. However, atrophy of the thymus is caused by apoptosis (programmed cell death) of lymphocytes within the thymic tissue.
