Gross Findings:
Despite intensive intravenous fluid therapy and antibiotics
the colt continued to deteriorate and was in severe toxaemic shock before
being euthanised.
Post mortem examination revealed extensive petechial (pinpoint) haemorrhages on the
serosal surfaces of the heart, lungs, diaphragm, intestines, and kidneys. There were also signs of fibrinopurulent polysynovitis (polyarthritis).
Distributed
over the entire surface of the kidneys, beneath the capsule were small
(1 mm) white foci. When the kidney was cut these white foci were seen
throughout the renal cortex but not in the medulla.
