Introduction

   

Types of acute inflammatory exudates:

Exudates are classified according to:

  • Time – peracute, acute, subacute, chronic

  • Gross appearance – catarrhal (lots of mucus), haemorrhagic (lots of blood), purulent/suppurative (pus)

  • Histological appearance – purulent/suppurative (exudate predominantly neutrophils), mononuclear (exudate predominantly mononuclear cells eg plasma cells, lymphocytes)
