Veterinary Pathology - Autolysis

Introduction

Autolysis versus Necrosis

  • Tissues which are involved in producing substances to help in the digestion of organic material contain large amounts of proteolytic enzymes and therefore tend to autolyse rapidly eg. pancreas.

  • While tissues containing less proteolytic enzymes and more structural protein such as muscle are slower to autolyse.

  • Necrosis refers to the death of a number of cells within a tissue or organ of a living animal. The processes of cell injury and death in necrosis may be the same or different to those of autolysis.

In summary: Necrosis is an antemortem process, and autolysis is a post mortem process.
