Cerbellum:
The cerebellum co-ordinates muscular activity and maintains
posture and equilibrium.
Haematoxylin & Eosin (x40)
It consists of a cortex of grey matter with a central
core of white matter. The cerebellar cortex forms a series of deeply convoluted
folds or folia supported by a branching central medulla of white
matter.
Haematoxylin & Eosin (x100)
At higher magnification it can be seen that the cortex
consists of three layers - an outer layer containing relatively few cells
(molecular layer), an inner very densly cellular layer (granule
cell layer) and an intervening layer composed of huge neurons called
Purkinje cells.
