Introduction
   

Cerbellum:

The cerebellum co-ordinates muscular activity and maintains posture and equilibrium.

It consists of a cortex of grey matter with a central core of white matter. The cerebellar cortex forms a series of deeply convoluted folds or folia supported by a branching central medulla of white matter.

At higher magnification it can be seen that the cortex consists of three layers - an outer layer containing relatively few cells (molecular layer), an inner very densly cellular layer (granule cell layer) and an intervening layer composed of huge neurons called Purkinje cells.
