Veterinary Pathology - Necrosis

Introduction

Introduction:

Necrosis refers to a sequence of morphologic changes that follow irreversible cell injury and cell death in living tissues (tissues placed in fixative or frozen are dead but not necrotic). There are several types of necrosis based on gross and histological appearance. General characteristics of cell necrosis are pyknosis or loss of the cell nucleus, hyper-eosinophilia of cell cytoplasm, loss of distinctive cell margins, leading eventually to fragmentation of cells, or complete dissolution of cells (ie lysis).

In this practical you will be asked to examine, describe and categorise different forms of necrosis and become familiar with recognising necrotic cell in tissues. This intorduction should help to prepare you for describing and diagnosing histopathological lesions.
