Case 1:
Clinical history:
A 5 year old female spayed German shepherd had a 6
week long history of non-regenerative anaemia and associated lethargy
and decreased exercise tolerance. A bone marrow biopsy revealed reduced
numbers of cells of the erythroid series. The bitch was suspected to have
an immune-mediated attack on marrow erythroid precursors. However, the
anaemia failed to respond to immunosuppressive therapy and anabolic steroids.
The dog’s clinical condition deteriorated and a decision was made
to euthanise.

At necropsy, multiple haemorrhagic and suppurative foci
were scattered throughout both kidneys.

Large thrombotic vegetations were detected on the mitral
valve leaflets.
