Introduction

Case 2:

Clinical History:

Five Hereford x Angus beef calves died at 6-8 weeks of age with signs of respiratory distress and collapse. Another calf was examined at 2 days of age because of mild scouring and depression. At 2 weeks of age, the calf became recumbent, developed respiratory distress and died within 24 hours.

At necropsy, the lungs were diffusely congested and severely oedematous. The heart was severely enlarged, with dilation of the left ventricle. There was pronounced pallor of the left ventricular myocardium, with focal subendocardial mineralisation.

This is a low power view of the left ventricular myocardium. A large coronary artery is at the bottom of the field. Only a small area of normal myocardium is recognisable, the remainder of the tissue appearing hypercellular.
