Introduction

Heart:

In this coronary artery, there is focal hyaline degeneration of the tunica media and subintima (especially to the left of the field).

Arteriosclerosis is common in older animals, especially in the abdominal aorta and at points of arterial branching. The aetiopathogenesis is uncertain but haemodynamic factors such as blood turbulence probably contribute. The lesions develop slowly and are usually incidental findings. However, they may occasionally lead to ischaemic injury and the areas of vessel damage are predisposed to thrombosis.

Microscopic lesions of mild coronary arteriosclerosis are common in the hearts of older animals. In severe cases, the coronary arteries may be grossly thickened.
