Introduction

Case 4:

Clinical History:

A 2 year old Standardbred stallion was presented for a large pendulous scrotum. Castration was performed. The testes were of soft consistency and there were prominent tortuous blood vessels beneath the tunica albuginea. The spermatic cord and soft tissues of the pampiniform plexus were severely oedematous bilaterally.

This is a low power view of the pampiniform plexus. Most of the sectioned blood vessels are arteries. Compare the thickness of their walls with those of the veins (top right).

This is a medium power view of an artery. Note the thickening and “onion-skinning” of the tunica adventitia and the cellular infiltrates in the vessel wall and surrounding connective tissues.
