Introduction

Disorders of Haemostasis

Defects in the mechanisms of haemostasis can be responsible for haemorrhage. This dog has petechial haemorrhages on its oral mucous membranes due to von Willebrand’s disease.

This piglet died from systemic haemorrhage due to immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. Note the numerous petechial and ecchymotic haemorrhages over the skin. Comparable haemorrhages would be present internally.

This German shepherd has haemophilia A. Bleeding is due to a deficiency of coagulation factor VIII.
