Nodular hyperplasia of the thyroid gland:This is a common disease in older cats. The pathogenesis
is unclear. Affected thyroids are enlarged, but not to the point of being
obvious to the uneducated. Nodular goiter in most animals (dogs, cats,
horses) is endocrinologically inactive, but in cats can be functional,
and in addition, functional adenomas typically develop within multinodular
hyperplasia in old cats. Nodules are not encapsulated in contrast to adenomas,
and result in minimal compression of adjacent parenchyma.
