At medium power, both the
white and grey matter of the hippocampus appears hypercellular due
to mild diffuse gliosis.
Many of the hippocampal neuronal
bodies appear eosinophilic rather than having the normal cytoplasmic
basophilia.
Cerebral blood vessels are
more prominent than normal due to reactive swelling of the endothelial
cells and their nuclei.
