At high magnification, a protozoal bradyzoite cyst is visible. Although it is the rapidly replicating tachyzoite phase of Toxoplasma gondii or Neospora caninum that is responsible for tissue necrosis, the finding of bradyzoite cysts within typical CNS lesions is sufficient grounds to suspect protozoal infection as the cause.
