Case 3:
History:
An 11 year old female beagle presented with a 1 month
history of polydipsia and lethargy. On physical examination, there was
palpable hepatomegaly. Serum biochemical abnormalities comprised elevated
ALP (1200 U/L) and ALT (120 U/L).
At exploratory laparotomy, the liver was irregularly
enlarged, with rounding of the lobe borders and with multifocal coarse
nodularity of the parenchyma. The parenchyma was paler than normal and
the consistency was slightly firmer.
At low magnification, the lobular architecture of the
liver is distorted. There are variably sized nodules of parenchyma, with
severe pallor of the intervening tissue. It is difficult to identify normal
portal areas and central veins but a few small bile ducts (which indicate
the original portal areas) are visible.
