Exudate may contain a high proportion of neutrophils,
making distinction from infectious processes difficult. This airway shows
chronic changes as well, with mucosal hyperplasia
Mucopus accumulates in the lumen of patients during an
allergic episode.
With chronicity: airway
remodelling and scarring develop. Mucosal alterations include cilial
loss, increased amount and viscosity of mucus, obstruction with inflammatory
exudates, hyperplasia of mucus producing cells, gas trapping leading
to emphysema and parenchymal scarring.
