Veterinary Pathology - Autolysis

Introduction

Room Temperature Storage - Internal Organs

When the body cavities are opened changes in several organs are noticeable:

  • The lungs have become darker due to pooling of blood, particularly in the lobes positioned ventral to the level of the heart and large vessels when in recumbency.

  • The intestinal loops are greatly dilated with gas and the walls appear very thin and translucent.

  • Chlorophyll and bile pigments have leaked out from digested material and stained the walls of the intestines and adjacent tissues.

  • The borders of the liver becomerounded due to pooling of blood and bile imbibition may be seen adjacent to the gall bladder (not visible in image).
