Veterinary Pathology - Necrosis

Introduction

Coagulative Necrosis:

In this form of necrosis the basic structural outlines of the cell are preserved and may be preserved for days or weeks following cell death. It occurs when both the structural and enzymatic proteins of the cell are denatured, and thus proteolysis is suspended. Muscle cells often undergo coagulative necrosis because of their large content of structural proteins. Often necrotic muscle cells will persist for weeks following ischaemic death. Coagulative necrosis is characteristic of hypoxic death in almost all cells except those of the central nervous system which typically undergoes liquefactive necrosis.
