Introduction

The most appropriate term for the appearance of the hepatocytes is severe hydropic degeneration. Cloudy swelling is the term used for much milder cell swelling and cytoplasmic clearing.

Cells showing cloudy swelling or hydropic degeneration may be storing excess glycogen or have water accumulating within swollen damaged organelles such as endoplasmic reticulum.
