Introduction

In contrast, excess triglyceride stored in hepatocytes undergoing fatty degeneration (= fatty change = hepatic lipidosis) appears as single or multiple, small or large, clear (empty) vacuoles with usually distinct margins. The lipid vacuoles often displace the hepatocyte nucleus to the periphery of the cell. The following two images are of the liver of a Shetland pony which died of hyperlipaemia/hyperlipidaemia syndrome. Hepatic lipidosis is expected in this condition.
