Healing Wounds
- 24hrs:
In both cases a fibrin clot forms (but this is much larger
in secondary intention healing because of the larger tissue deficit),
then neutrophils move in & line the margins of the wound. Basal cells
begin to undergo mitosis in order to replace lost cells.
Between 24 & 48 hours epithelial cells from the wound edges begin
to migrate & grow, depositing basement membrane as they move. They
fuse in the midline beneath the surface scab, thus producing a thin but
continuous epithelial layer. The time that elapses before this occurs
depends on infection, size of deficit & sufficient blood supply.
