Healing Wounds
- weeks:
Primary:
Collagen continues to accumulate as fibroblast proliferation
occurs. The inflammatory reaction has almost disappeared. Fibrous union
occurs and there is regression of the vascular channels of the granulation
tissue as the fibrous tissue matures and blanches. Although largely healed
after 7-10 days, full tissue strength is not achieved for several weeks.
Secondary:
One feature that clearly differentiates secondary intention healing
is the “wound contraction”, that occurs in large surface wounds.
Large defects in ‘mobile skin’ may be reduced to 5-10% of
their original size during healing, owing to the presence & activity
of myofibroblasts. Ultimately a large scar still remains.
