Introduction

Secondary wound - 28 days:

Haematoxylin & Eosin (x40)

The granulation tissue continues to contract and be replaced by more mature fibrous tissue which is constituted by a larger percentage of collagen (C). Note that structures such as hair follicles are not replaced and so the region remains hairless.

Haematoxylin & Eosin (x400)

Broad band of maturing granulation (G) beneath the epidermis (E). Fewer holes are present within granulation tissue indicating atrophy of capillaries. Granulation tissue is now composed primarily of collagen fibrils + mature fibrocytes.
