Surgical Environment

Introduction

The design, construction and layout of the operating theatre, as well as operating room protocols are also important aspects of aseptic technique.
Whilst not a major cause of surgical infections, it is essential that the surgical environment does not contribute to the distribution of pathogenic organisms by way of the patient contacting contaminated surfaces, or by being exposed to air-born particles.
The factors which must be considered in this regard are the design of the surgery (Unit 12), including appropriate air movement, cleaning procedures for the facility (Unit 13) and the proper conduct of personnel within the surgery, otherwise known as “surgical etiquette” (Unit 14).
