Exercise 1

Preparation Of The Patient And The Surgeon 1

Introduction

Welcome to Surgery Exercise 1.
This exercise will take the form of demonstration in two parts.
Although animals are not used in this class, each and every student must learn and familiarise themselves with the correct 'asceptic procedures'.  Each student will be expected to demonstrate competency in these techniques in Exercise 2.
Success in this will contribute to your skills aquisition check-list which has to be completed as part of this course.

All skills learned in this class will be used in later classes, during your clinical rotations and then in veterinary practice. Failure to maintain asceptic technique, particularly in clinical rotations will not be tolerated, and the student may be directed to review this part of the course.

Part 1

This exercise is designed to familiarise you with the standard techniques used at the University of Melbourne, Veterinary Hospital for preparing the surgeon and patient for surgery.
The student will be shown the requirements for surgical attire, correct methods of  gowning and gloving, patient 'skin' preparation, patient draping, and instrument table set-up.
There will also be a discussion and demonstration of correct “surgical ettiquette”.
As this session will possibly be your first access to surgical gloves and gloving please try several different sizes and find the one which is most comfortable for you, and remember this for future prac's.

Part 2

This part of the exercise will familiarize you with the standard surgical instruments used in most surgical kits. It is important to become familiar with the names of these instruments, but particular emphasis will be placed on correct instrument handling and use.
You will also be shown some basic suture and knot tying techniques. You will then be given the opportunity to practice these techniques using suture models.

Exercise Tasks

  1. Review the relevant units demonstrated in this execise. (Links to be made to each unit here as below)
  1. Practice your instrument (square knot) suture ties as demonstrated during the exercise (You will need to demonstrate this in exercise 3).
  1. Complete Exercise 1 exit quiz in the Virtual Veterinary Surgery program (Assessment).

Exercise 1 Exit Quiz

How to complete the Exit Quiz associated with this exercise.

Answer each of the questions in the quiz and then submit your answers by clicking on the “submit” button at the end of the quiz.
You will then receive a response to your answers (ie. Correct or Incorrect). If you have answered a question incorrectly, you will be invited to re-consider your answer. Use the information provided to you in the exercise tasks to assist you in providing the correct answer. On completion of your revised answers you may then re-submit the answers by clicking on the “submit” button.
Correct answers will be accompanied by a supporting statement for your answer.

Completion of the exit quiz and tasks set for each exercise will provide you with an opportunity to develop your clinical competencies in basic surgical practice and contribute to the completion of your “skills acquisition checklist”.
