Overview to Exercises

Practical Exercises

As part of the Virtual Veterinary Surgery program you will participate in 4 practical exercises for which you will be required to perform a number of tasks including pre-reading and exit quizzes.

Practical Surgery in these exercises will be taught using a combination of demonstration and “hands-on” methods which have the following objectives:

  1. The surgical exercises will provide the student with an opportunity to identify and gain technical skills in the handling of instruments and tissues and to become familiar with a number of common surgical principles.
  2. Surgical exercise classes aim to introduce the student to operating room procedures and aseptic technique.
  3. The anaesthesia component of these labs aims to provide reinforcement and review of previous pharmacology and physiology instruction in so far as these subjects relate to anaesthesia.  These labs allow an opportunity for the student to observe techniques used in anaesthesia and patient monitoring.
  4. The exercises will support a knowledge of instrument identification, use and care,  and skills in suture patterns and knot placement.
